An abdominoplasty, or more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a procedure whereby excess fatty tissue and skin is removed from the abdomen in order to improve the look of the lower, and upper, tummy area.
Often, as a simultaneous procedure, the abdominal muscles are tightened at the time of operation in order further tighten the abdomen and repair the local anatomy. Also, a great number of patients will benefit from localized liposuction of the upper and lateral abdominal areas in order to further smoothen out the tummy. The overall result is to improve the appearance as well as the contour of the abdominal area in qualified candidates.
The typical abdominoplasty is performed in an operating room under general anaesthesia, and usually lasts 2-3 hrs depending on the needs of the individual patient.
The typical abdominoplasty is performed in an operating room under general anaesthesia, and usually lasts 2-3 hrs depending on the needs of the individual patient. Nowadays this procedure is most often performed on an out-patient basis; that is to say that the patient will come to the hospital (or accredited surgical ambulatory care facility) in the morning, they will have their surgery, and will be able to return home the same day with all the appropriate post-operative care instructions and an appointment to return to see the surgeon one week later.
During the operation a transverse (side-to-side) incision is made in the lower part of the abdomen just above the pubis. The excess skin and fatty tissue is separated from the underlying muscles, and is then pulled inferiorly and the excess is removed. As part of the procedure, the belly button is protected and replaced in its proper position at the end of the surgery. If the abdominal muscles are observed to also be loose, they are repaired as an integral part of the procedure.
Appropriate candidates for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure are those who find themselves at a point in their life where they notice excess abdominal fat and /or skin. This is commonly seen in women after pregnancy (where the skin has been stretched out and has remained loose), as well as in persons who have undergone a significant loss of weight, and for whom the abdomen now remains loose.
Also, depending on the individual quality of skin in all of us, the passage of time depletes the elastic substance in the skin and may lead to loose abdominal skin.

The final results of tummy tuck surgery may be initially obscured by swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete.
Within a week or two, you should be standing tall and confident in your new slimmer profile. Your tummy tuck will result in a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body type and weight.
